DIY Taco Seasoning Mix
It’s the second best night of the week, at least at our house. Second only to Pizza Night, of course. It seems to me that most families have tacos on the menu frequently, if not weekly. And why not? It’s quick, easy, and pleases the whole crowd every time. Though I don’t know that I’ve ever seen two families with the exact same version. Don’t we all love to make it our very own?
At our house, we keep a BIG jar of DIY Taco Seasoning in the cabinet so that we can easily season our ground beef without contaminating our food with chemicals, preservatives, dyes, or any other such nonsense. Just the ground beef and spices thank you!
We mix in some black beans and corn too. Then we chop up some tomatoes, lettuce, avocado, and green onions, if we have them on hand. We gobble all this up along with some Organic (Non-GMO Project Verified) tortilla chips ~ our weekly splurge ~ and a spoonful of fermented salsa (recipe coming soon!).
If we were absolutely perfect, we’d probably skip the chips. Fortunately, we’re not absolutely perfect, though we have had to be from time to time (so thankful to be past that!) And anyway, we really love tortilla chips! If you are not currently eating grains, or are avoiding corn because of a sensitivity – all of the above (minus the chips) is still a fantastic and very filling dinner.
So, without further ado.. here’s our family’s taco seasoning recipe. Feel free to tweak it to fit your tastes. Isn’t that what makes tacos so great anyway?
DIY Taco Seasoning Mix
1 cup chili powder
1 /3 cup cumin
4 tablespoons smoked paprika
4 tablespoons (REAL) salt
2 tablespoons (granulated) garlic powder
2 tablespoons (granulated) onion powder
2 tablespoons black pepper
3 teaspoons red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
Combine all ingredients in a quart (32 oz) size jar.
Stir well and shake.
Keep the tightly closed jar (or other air-tight container) in the pantry.
Use approximately 2 tablespoons seasoning mix for each pound of meat.
I usually stock up on my spices in the bulk section at the local health food co-op. I absolutely refuse to pay for a new jar every time I need more paprika! What a waste! Once I get all my little baggies of spices home, I quickly mix up my DIY seasoning mixes and then store the remainder of the spices in my own jars in the cabinet. This allows us to use LOTS of these immune-boosting, inflammation-slashing spices in our cooking every day. If you don’t have a local option for bulk spices, Amazon also has a great selection.
